Abstract
We aim to provide a critical overview of certain practices in high-dimensional data analysis and mining while elaborating on a selected collection of outstanding challenges associated with the inherent complexity of very high-dimensional data spaces. In view of these challenges, we also intend to discuss some directions for future research in areas that include similarity search, similarity graphs, as well as their potential connections to dimensionality reduction and representation learning, with a special focus on unsupervised learning tasks, such as clustering.
