Abstract

Modern bike sharing systems allow to monitor in real time the situation of bike availability at bike sharing parking places. Among the many management aspects to be considered, we will focus on the re-positioning problem. This is the problem faced by the manager of the system who would like to relocate bikes in such a way that bikes will be available where there will be a likely demand, and that empty places will be available at stations where users will deliver their bikes.
In order to solve the problem two aspects need to be considered: first a statistical analysis has to be performed in order to be able to predict future needs for bikes and places; second, given a prediction, optimal tours for a set of relocation vehicles have to be planned.
In this talk I will introduce these topics and outline some algorithmic proposals.
