Abstract
Smart objects have become increasingly common in everyday environments. They promise to improve our lives, but to fully realise the potential of the Internet of Things, users need platforms that support their coordinated use and enable multi-object automations. However, both commercial and research solutions still present important challenges. A central issue lies in balancing expressiveness with ease of use: systems limited to simple rules often lack flexibility, while more powerful platforms can quickly become complex and difficult to engage with. In addition, selecting and configuring automations functionalities is not always straightforward. For this reason, there is a growing need for user-friendly representations that help people configure automations correctly and develop accurate mental models of the system. In this context, smartphone-based Augmented Reality can play a key role in making interaction with smart environments more intuitive, while recommender systems can further support users in the configuration process. Exploring these approaches offers valuable insights for designing more effective solutions for controlling smart environments.
