Abstract
I argue that interaction with many forms of data constitutes 'complex' interaction, characterised by multitasking situations, highly-specialised domain, high cognitive demand, and large size - and often also inhibited by poorly designed user interfaces that fail to support effective understanding and manipulation. Conventional usability methods are of limited applicability to the study of these complex interactions. In this talk I demonstrate novel approaches to modelling complex interactions using event and eye movement data in the context of ontology authoring. I will discuss how the lessons learned can be applied to model-driven evaluation and generation of user interfaces.
