On the 23th of November 2018, the Austrian Presidency and the European Commission have celebrated the official launch of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and have invited stakeholders from all Member States at an event in Vienna. Open Science promotes data sharing, reuse of processes, repeatability and reproducibility of scientific experiments, and overall aims at overcoming the barriers often faced by multi-disciplinary research. In the context of the Vienna event, the EOSC portal (eosc-portal.eu) was presented, which provides access to the Open Science services offered by many European research institutes. A research study by Isti-Cnr has been selected by the EU Commission - among many candidates - as a virtuous example of Open Science. During the event, Gianpaolo Coro - Researcher at Isti - has shown the approach he used in collaboration with other scientists to predict the invasion of the Mediterranean Sea by the dangerous silver-cheeked toadfish (https://www.cnr.it/it/news/7882/), through the use of the D4Science e-Infrastructure available on the EOSC portal. D4Science provided the Web services and the computational models that have allowed to predict the areas that will be most impacted by the invasion. Also, D4Science allows other scientists to verify the results, repeat the experiment, and reuse the processes to predict invasions by other species. At the end of the event, the "Vienna Declaration on the European Open Science Cloud Governance Structure" was officialised. Taking also the work presented by Isti as a reference, the Declaration highlights the fundamental steps to implement and promote Open Science approaches in future scientific experiments. The European Commission estimates that EOSC will be used by 1.7 million researchers and 70 million science and technology professionals in the next future.
